Project Case Study – When Grip Carries the Frame

Description

Before the project started, DoP Konstantin Mazov said to our key grip Kailo: “A lot is on grip’s shoulders.”

It turned out to be exactly that kind of job.

This was a technically demanding, grip-heavy production built around complex car work. We engineered multiple side rigs for dynamic driving shots and constructed a full rainbow rig using Modulus X trusses to create stable, flexible camera positioning around the vehicle. Every mount had to be rigid, road-safe, and quick to adjust — because once the car rolls, there’s no time for second guessing.

One of the most technically interesting shots came directly from Konstantin’s vision: a spinning camera move synchronized with a moving car wheel so that the BMW logo stays perfectly still while everything else rotates. The solution required mounting the camera precisely inside the exact rotational axis of the wheel. That meant sourcing an identical wheel, building a secure internal mount, calculating balance, and fine-tuning rotational speed until the illusion worked. Kailo remembered a similar execution he had seen online and adapted the concept to our setup. After testing and careful adjustment, the shot came out clean, stable, and visually striking in the final video.

And then there was the combination that made everyone smile: a compact DJI Ronin RS 4 mounted on a massive MovieBird 45. It looked almost absurd — tiny stabilizer, giant arm — but we needed to lower the camera smoothly through a sunroof into the car interior. In that context, it made perfect sense. The smaller gimbal provided the necessary clearance, while the crane delivered precision and reach.

This project was a reminder that grip work isn’t background support — it’s structural storytelling. Engineering, adapting, problem-solving, and sometimes remembering that one clever solution you once saw online.

A lot was on grip’s shoulders. Exactly where it belonged.
